Cosmetic Packaging Cost Breakdown

Unit price is a sum of six costs. Knowing their shares shows immediately which lever will move your landed cost.

Quotations are usually a single number. Internally, packaging cost is a stack, and understanding the stack is how cost reduction stops being guesswork.

The stack

Cost elementTypical share of unit costReduced by
Resin + part weight25–35%Lighter walls, right-sized capacity, favorable resin choice
Moulding cycle, labour, overhead15–25%Higher volume, more cavities, stock tooling

The freight variable nobody models

Two packs with the same unit price can differ 10–20% in landed cost because of packing. Check:

  • Carton dimensions and carton-out quantity
  • Net and gross weight
  • Pallet utilisation and stacking height
  • Whether a secondary carton can be removed without damaging the pack

A 5 mm diameter increase often costs more in freight than it saves in resin.

Where the biggest savings are

  1. Stock mould instead of custom tooling
  2. Right-sized capacity — resin, cartons and freight all fall together
  3. One decoration method for the range, with SKU identity from colour
  4. Carton optimisation and pallet loading
  5. Volume — the largest breaks are between 1,000–10,000 pcs and 10,000–50,000 pcs

How to compare two quotes

Convert both to landed cost per unit at your expected sell-through, then compare. A lower unit price with a 20% larger carton and an unsold tail is the more expensive option. Use the cost guide as a checklist.

    Quick answers

The questions this guide receives most often, answered in one or two lines.

What percentage of cosmetic packaging cost is decoration?

Typically 5–20% per unit, plus a one-time set-up charge that can add 5–15% to the order value at low quantities. Decoration is the most elastic cost item in a pack.

Is it cheaper to print or to label?

Labelling avoids set-up, so it is cheaper for short runs and complex artwork. Above roughly 30,000 pcs with two or three colours, direct printing generally costs less per unit.

How much does freight add to packaging cost?

On long-haul sea freight, 5–20% of landed cost depending on carton volume and pallet utilisation. Air freight for launch-critical orders can add considerably more.
