How to Choose Packaging for Cleanser
Cleansers are used wet, fast and often. Closure function, orifice sizing and cost per ml matter more than premium finishing here.

Cleanser is usually the highest-volume SKU in a skincare range, used wet and quickly. Packaging decisions here are practical: how the product flows, how the closure survives humidity, and what the pack costs at retail volume.
Format by texture
| Texture | Best format | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gel cleanser | HDPE or PET bottle with flip-top | One-hand closure, controlled flow |
| Cream cleanser | Bottle with pump, or tube | Pumpable; tube empties fully |
| Foaming cleanser | Bottle with foam pump | Aerates a low-viscosity surfactant base |
| Cleansing balm | Wide-mouth jar or squeeze tube | Dense texture, needs wide access |
| Micellar water | Bottle with disc-top or flip-top | Thin fluid, no pump needed |
| Powder cleanser | Wide-mouth jar with sifter | Prevents moisture ingress from hands |

Orifice sizing from viscosity
| Viscosity | Orifice | Typical closure |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1,000 cP | 3–5 mm | Disc-top, push-pull |
| 1,000–3,000 cP | 6–8 mm | Flip-top |
| 3,000–8,000 cP | 8–10 mm | Wide flip-top, pump |
| Above 8,000 cP | 10–12 mm or wide mouth | Wide flip-top, jar, tube |
Sizing the orifice from the measured viscosity prevents the two most common complaints: blocked flow and uncontrollable pouring.
Material and sustainability
HDPE is the standard choice: it resists surfactants, blocks light and is available with 25–100% post-consumer recycled content. A mono-material HDPE bottle with an HDPE cap is also the simplest pack to present as recyclable.
Where refill matters, a lightweight HDPE refill bottle plus a screw-off pump on the decorated outer bottle keeps refill economics viable on a product with a low price per litre. See refillable packaging.
Foam pumps need a formula test
Foam quality depends on viscosity and surfactant type, and a foam pump that works in a lab bottle may not perform with your formula. Ask for a filling trial before committing to the pump specification.
Cost and MOQ
Cleanser packaging sits at the value end of the range: stock HDPE moulds in 150–500 ml, one-colour printing or a label, and a flip-top cap. Stock formats start at 1,000 pcs, decorated orders at 3,000 pcs, and production runs 15–30 working days after sample approval.
Practical checks
- Leak test inverted for 30 minutes at specified torque
- Closure cycle test for repeated wet-hand use
- Label or print adhesion in humid conditions
- Carton drop test for e-commerce transit
- Refill compatibility if the pack will be reused
Quick answers
The questions this guide receives most often, answered in one or two lines.
What packaging is best for a gel cleanser?
A 150–250 ml HDPE bottle with a flip-top cap and a 6–8 mm orifice. For premium positioning a PET bottle with a pump works, and for refill programmes a mono-material HDPE bottle with an HDPE cap is the simplest structure.
Do cleansers need special closures?
They need closures that survive humidity and repeated wet-hand use, which means a cycle-tested flip-top or disc cap and a leak-tested fit at the specified torque.
Can cleanser packaging be recycled?
Yes if it is mono-material: an HDPE bottle with an HDPE cap sorts well. Full-body sleeves and mixed-material pumps reduce the outcome, so use a front-and-back label where recyclability is claimed.
