How to Choose Sustainable Skincare Packaging

Sustainable packaging choices conflict with each other. Ranking two priorities first is what makes the rest of the specification straightforward.

Every sustainability decision in packaging trades against something: cost, appearance, protection or collection infrastructure. Brands that get stuck are usually trying to satisfy all of them at once on one SKU.

Step 1: pick two priorities

Step 2: map the product to the strategy

  • Cleanser and body care → PCR HDPE bottles, mono-material caps, lightweight refill bottles
  • Moisturiser cream → refillable PP jar with PCR refill cup, or single-wall PP jar with PCR content
  • Serum → airless pack (protection is the sustainability argument: fewer wasted units) with PCR PP body where colour allows
  • Sunscreen → HDPE or barrier tube with PCR-PE body, no secondary carton where regulation permits

Step 3: quantify what you changed

Step 4: avoid claims you cannot evidence

  • "100% eco-friendly" — meaningless and unsupported
  • "Fully recyclable everywhere" — collection infrastructure varies
  • "Plastic-free" on a pack that contains plastic
  • Certificate logos for grades not used in your order

Step 5: accept the residual trade-off in writing

State what the pack does not achieve. A pack that reduces virgin material by 50% but remains a coated, mixed-material assembly is still an improvement — described accurately, it is also credible. Retail buyers and consumers are more likely to accept a specific, modest claim than a broad one.

What is the easiest first step for a skincare brand?

Moving an existing opaque HDPE or coloured PP pack to certified PCR resin. It requires no tooling change, delivers a verifiable percentage, and only introduces a small colour tolerance to approve.

Is refill always better than recycled content?

Refill has a higher potential saving because it reduces material per use, but it depends on customer behaviour and mechanism quality. Recycled content is more certain in outcome because it applies to every unit sold.

How do I compare two packaging options?

Compare grams per use, not grams per pack: total material across the pack and the refills it requires, divided by the number of uses it provides. We supply component weights so you can run the calculation on your own volumes.
