PCR packaging uses post-consumer recycled resin, so the pack contains material recovered from consumer waste rather than virgin feedstock. The percentage should be verified against the resin grade, not assumed.

PCR is the most common recycled-content route in cosmetic packaging because it is a dosed-in change: the same moulds, the same decoration, a different resin. For a brand, it converts a sustainability commitment into a percentage per unit that can be reported.
What matters commercially is specificity. 'PCR packaging' is not a metric. '50% post-consumer recycled HDPE, grade certified, certificate on file' is — and it survives a procurement or marketing review.

How to verify recycled content
Verification should be document-based, per grade and per order, not per marketing asset.
- Certified grade: recycled-content certificate stating stream (post-consumer) and percentage
- Supplier declaration: resin specification naming the recycled content of the grade
- Batch record: links the resin lot used in your production run to the declared grade
- If the grade is not certified: describe the input source and avoid quoting a fixed percentage
What changes in practice
Colour: high PCR percentages are hardest to match in white and bright shades; opaque, dark or sprayed parts are easiest.
Odour: some recycled grades carry odour, which matters for unscented products — panel test the filled pack.
Performance: equivalent in most constructions, but thin walls at very high recycled content should be stacking and drop tested.
Cost: recycled grades usually cost at or above virgin resin, with variation depending on the recycled resin market.

What does PCR stand for in packaging?
Post-consumer recycled. It refers to plastic collected after consumer use and reprocessed into new resin, as opposed to post-industrial recycled (PIR) material, which is manufacturing scrap that never reached a consumer.
What PCR percentage can you supply for cosmetic packaging?
rHDPE and rPET are available from 25–100% post-consumer content and rPP from 30–100%, depending on grade, colour and resin market availability. We quote the percentage the selected grade actually carries.
Is PCR packaging as strong as virgin plastic?
For most cosmetic applications yes — it is the same polymer. Thin-wall constructions at very high recycled content are the exception, so we recommend stacking and drop testing on the filled carton before production release.
Does PCR packaging cost more?
Usually at or above virgin pricing, and certified cosmetic grades carry a premium. We quote virgin and PCR versions side by side so the difference per unit and per order is explicit.
Can a PCR pack also be recyclable?
Yes, if it is mono-material: for example a 100% PCR HDPE bottle with an HDPE cap. Recycled content and recyclability are separate claims and should be stated separately.
